Unveiling Kicker Underseat Subwoofers

Almost every audiophile that I have encountered has tried the Kicker underseat subwoofer at least once in their life.

From their perspective, I can confidently say that Kicker underseat subs are game-changers, providing a reasonable bass without occupying most of their vehicle spaces. Yup! I am talking about two of the most famous subwoofer models from Kicker Audio: 11HS8 and Kicker 46HS10

Whether you love listening to rock, jazz, or electronic music, the Kicker underseat subwoofers are tuned to reproduce all genres accurately, ensuring every beat and rhythm is perfectly captured.

In this article, I will provide you with deep knowledge and experience about these famous underseat subwoofers!

The Appeal of Underseat Subwoofers:

Let me give you a short introduction about underseat subwoofers! In the past decade, these subs have gained a reputation among many audiophiles not just because of their compact design but also because of the quality bass they emit.

Their strategic placement under the seat creates an immersive listening experience by delivering powerful and precise bass right where you can feel it the most.

So, if you tell me these underseat subwoofers are good, I will definitely recommend them if you are a family guy or a regular listener who just wants to take their car audio system to the next level.

However, if you are an absolute beginner or pro bass lover, you should go with Kicker Audio, as it is known for its high-quality yet affordable audio equipment, making it a cost-effective and accessible entry point. An aftermarket subwoofer is always better than a factory sub.

Kicker 46HS10 Review: A Deep Dive

Welcome to our comprehensive section of the Kicker 46HS10 review, a compact underseat subwoofer that promises to deliver powerful bass.

If you don’t want to waste your time looking for a legit subwoofer, just close your eyes and believe in our words to choose this model.

However, it may have some slight negative points (you can never find a perfect subwoofer in the world!).

I would just say that the Kicker 46HS10 is a true testament to Kicker’s innovative design approach, incorporating an integrated amplifier to consolidate its space-efficient design further.

But can this compact unit truly satisfy the bass cravings of discerning audiophiles, or is it a case of style over substance? Please read the below section to get all the answers you want.

Product Specs.

  • Subwoofer Size: 10″
  • RMS Power: 180W
  • Frequency Response: 25Hz to 120Hz
  • Crossover: 12dB/octave lowpass @ 50Hz – 120Hz, 24dB/octave highpass @ 25Hz
  • Phase Switch: 0 to 180 degree
  • Input Sensitivity: Low level – 250mV-10V, High level – 1V-40V
  • Product Dimensions: (Length x Width x Height): 34. inches x 23. inches x 23. inches

Power and Performance:

As I have mentioned above, the Kicker 10 Hideaway subwoofer has an integrated 180-watt RMS amplifier, which ensures rich and punchy bass from the driver.

However, the company hasn’t mentioned peak power handling if you want to use the subwoofer without using its own internal amplifier. However, I believe it to be around 500W peak power handling (so don’t push it over this capacity).

If I talk about the frequency response, its 25 to 120Hz range can really accommodate the majority of bass-heavy tracks, providing a wide range of deep, resonant sounds.

After trying it with different genres, it could handle subtle bass notes for a nuanced listening experience or manipulate ground-shaking beats when you crave a more powerful auditory impact.

Unique Features:

1. Ultra-Compact Design:

This enclosed subwoofer has a 10″ shallow subwoofer, built especially for very tight places. You can easily hide the subwoofer under the seat, or even you can use the trunk area for more optimal performance without sacrificing the space.

2. All-In-One Solution:

This model provides you with a powerful amplifier that has all the advanced features to manipulate its performance.

You don’t need any separate amplifier, which makes it appealing for stock car systems (also aftermarket head unit).

The connectivity includes both high and low-level input (using a wiring harness, making it plug a plug-and-play device.

3. Quick-Connect Molex® Power:

Unlike the traditional setup, Kicker 46HS10 has Quick-Connect Molex® Power, making it an ideal choice for beginners (One of my favorite things).

You just need a specialized connector that simplifies linking the subwoofer to its power source, making it a hurdle-free process.

4. Remote Bass Control:

The package also includes a remote bass wire that will allow you to control the bass output in your driving seat.

Let’s say you are in the mood for a subtle bass undertone or a booming resonance; you wouldn’t have to approach the unit by opening the trunk or accessing the under-seat area wherever you have placed it.

5. Rigid Aluminum Construction:

If I talk about the enclosure built quality, it is made of a tough all-aluminum chassis.

You will have two main benefits: the solid aluminum enhances durability, protecting it from harsh external factors, and secondly, it is an excellent conductor of heat. However, It felt a bit hot when I touched it after a prolonged use.

6. Selectable Electronic Crossover:

In the enclosure tuning options, you will also find a feature labeled as X-Over frequency.

An adjustable low pass crossover acts as a filter, determining which frequencies you want to send to the sub and which are directed to other speakers.

I found this feature very helpful for an extensive sound system as it allows for more harmonious integration of the HS10 with other audio components.

7. Automatic Turn-on Options:

It also comes with an Auto Turn-On Option, reducing the strain on your car battery. However, I am not completely satisfied with this feature as it may not be able to detect low-level input signals occasionally.

Therefore, if you face trouble, you would need to provide a stronger signal to activate the subwoofer.

Installation and Integration: Making HS10 Part of Your Setup

If you place it in the right position with the proper tuning, I am assured that It won’t just rattle your car windows, but you may also hear the tight bass outside the vehicle.

For the best sound quality, I would prefer you to place it under the passenger seat next to the driver’s. However, you need to use some mounting bracket to ensure it won’t slip away during the heavy bass playing.

Also, don’t forget to use a rubber padding between the sub and the mounts, which is crucial to eliminating metal-on-metal noise. Mostly, I use 14AWG to power the subwoofer for extending the negative.

While the Kicker Hideaway Kicker 46HS10 has an auto power-on feature, you should bypass the blue wire to the head unit (This tip was shared by one of my colleagues).

Also, you can use “high-level input” for more optimal performance if you want to connect the L/R speaker wires for both speakers and the subwoofer.

Real User Insights: Kicker 46HS10 Reviews From Our Community

Chad B.

Chad, a hardcore music lover, reported that the subwoofer performed literally well in his 2019 Toyota Tundra TRD when aimed for a subtle bass boost.

The subwoofer surprised me when the mighty thump vibrated my rearview mirror! I literally got myself in love with the bass knob. Initially, I was looking for dual subwoofers, but yup, one proved to be very ample.

I have just upgraded my F150 Super Crew sound system from Kicker 11HS8 to 46HS10 (I’m glad I did). My head unit already has an equalizer and crossover settings, which gave me more control over the subwoofer’s performance.

This subwoofer is the ideal solution for those grappling with limited space, especially in an extended-cab F-150. A bonus? The consistent connector plug ensured a hassle-free switch.

StarBaby

I recently got it installed from Mike in my 2021 Toyota 4Runner. After trying it in a week, its performance remained the same (genuinely impressive).

Like other subwoofers, which you need to break in properly for its actual output, this subwoofer was already working at its best. However, it won’t make a big difference if you are a guy looking to shake neighboring windows.

With a powerful 180w RMS/360w Max Class D amplifier, the bass is clear, tight, and can dominate when turned up. For me, the remote bass control knob and the adjustable low pass crossover are bonuses, allowing fine-tuning, and I’ve discreetly placed mine without any external visibility.

The Kicker HS8: More Than Just a Compact Powerhouse:

kicker 11hs8

If you are confused between choosing the compact-powered HS10 or HS8, this section may help you. However, this subwoofer is more famous and has a lower price point than HS10, but it may also provide a lower sound quality because of its 8″ size.

Moving forward! I have tried Kicker 11HS8 in many car audio setups, and believe me, every time, the results were different. Specifically engineered for those who crave deep, immersive bass but lack ample space, this subtle 8-inch Hideaway sub seamlessly merges with restricted areas, such as underneath seats (front or rear seats).

But does this pint-sized powerhouse hold up to Kicker’s esteemed sound legacy? This section is solely focused on the Kicker Hideaway 11HS8 review.

Product Specifications:

  • Driver Size: 8″
  • RMS Power: 150W
  • Frequency Response: 25Hz to 120Hz
  • Crossover: 12dB/octave lowpass @ 50Hz – 120Hz, 24dB/octave highpass @ 25Hz
  • Phase Switch: 0 to 180 degree
  • Input Sensitivity: Low level – 125mV-5V, High level – 250mV-10V
  • Product Dimensions: 13 7/8 x 9 3/8 x 3 1/8

About My Experience:

This 8″ sealed subwoofer has almost the same tuning functions if I compare it with the HS10. However, 11HS8 features a built-in class-D amplifier with 150 RMS ratings.

Because of its low-profile design, you can easily place the sub in very tight areas (I have mentioned the dimensions above). However, this underseat subwoofer won’t be enough to shake your neighbors’ windows, but I found it very useful to bang the things inside the vehicle.

If I talk about its built quality, the enclosure is made of solid wooden material and can easily handle the harsh environments of the car. Just because of the build quality, I have featured it in one of best underseat subwoofers list.

You will find a remote turn-on switch, input level switch, phase switch, power LED, bass boost knob, adjustable low pass crossover knob, gain knob, remote bass output, wiring harness, and 10A fuse on the enclosure back.

I have played this subwoofer through different music genres, and believe me, it also performed beyond my expectations. One thing I didn’t really like about it was having no peak power rating from the company (same as Kicker HS10).

For example, if someone’s internal amplifier got burnt and wants to use this subwoofer as a passive (with an external amplifier), he might not know what amplifier to use.

Power and Performance:

Its 150 RMS built-in amplifier allows the 11HS8 to deliver a rich, deep bass that adds a perceivable depth to any car audio setup. The subwoofer’s frequency response is quite broad, spanning 25 to 120Hz, enabling it to capture a wide range of bass notes.

This versatility makes it suitable for various music genres, from hip-hop’s heavy bass lines to rock music’s rhythmic pulses. While it might not match the force of larger, more powerful subwoofers, the 11HS8 holds its own remarkably well, given its size.

Unique Features:

1. Velcro®-Fastened Nylon Straps:

The package includes nylon straps, which can be really helpful for mounting Kicker 11HS8. These straps offer substantial holding power, ensuring your subwoofer remains stable even during intense bass outputs, enhancing the overall audio experience.

Moreover, Velcro® straps are widely known for their durability and resistance to wear and tear, increasing the subwoofer’s longevity. They also allow for easy installation and removal, enabling users to adjust the subwoofer’s position according to their preference.

2. Remote Bass Control:

Like 46HS10, It also empowers users to modify the bass levels in real-time, adapting the sound output according to their preferences.

This means whether you’re listening to the deep, resonant tones of classical music, the pulsating beats of EDM, or the nuanced rhythms of jazz, you can fine-tune your audio experience while sitting in your driver seat.

This feature promotes an immersive and personalized listening environment, bringing out the best in your music regardless of genre or mood.

3. Adjustable Low-Pass Crossover:

The Adjustable Low-Pass Crossover allows users to adjust the cutoff point for low frequencies, tailoring the audio output to match their specific system setup.

The customization provided by this feature ensures an optimal balance between the subwoofer and main speakers, improving the overall sound performance.

This level of control, combined with the robust design of the Kicker 11HS8, provides users with a superior listening experience, making the Selectable Low-Pass Crossover an advantageous feature in this model.

4. Efficient Cooling:

Despite the very compact design, I really loved its efficient cooling system. After prolonged use, It felt not so overheated when touched, unlike other subwoofers.

However, you must ensure the proper ventilation. Moreover, this thermal management process ensures that the components within the unit remain within safe operating temperatures, even during extended periods of high output.

This not only protects the 11HS8 from possible thermal damage but also enhances the unit’s overall lifespan, making it a durable and reliable choice.

5. Auto Turn-On:

Like HS10, the Kicker 11HS8 has a remote turn-on feature, providing a hassle-free user experience. This feature senses when an audio signal is present and promptly powers up the subwoofer, eliminating the need for manual operation.

Also, it promotes energy efficiency by turning off the subwoofer when not in use. However, the detection sensitivity varies, and there might be instances where your regular stereo might not trigger the subwoofer’s auto-on feature.

In such cases, manual intervention might be required, a small trade-off for overall user comfort and eco-friendly design.

Installation and Integration: Making Kicker 11HS8 Part of Your Setup:

I have used 16AWG to power this model, too. However, I placed this subwoofer under the driver’s seat for more optimal sound quality this time. But I don’t know if this position suits you.

After finding the most suitable location in your vehicle, you can begin the installation process, which is like a plug-and-play, even for beginners. Depending on your system, you must choose between high-level or low-level inputs (However, I suggest you use speaker-level inputs for best bass quality).

After properly connecting the inputs, use the low-pass crossover and bass control to fine-tune your preferred audio. It’s all about crafting an audio experience that caters to your unique tastes.

Once everything is in place and adjusted, securely fasten the 11HS8 using the Velcro® straps provided. Remember, a secure installation is vital for both performance and safety.

(This was the setup that I used when configuring the Hideaway 11HS8.)
